Green Tea Could Help Prevent Arthritis

Tea, particularly Green Tea, helps prevent and even treat multiple health problems from Alzheimer’s to heart health. Now Green Tea could help prevent Arthritis. Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints. A joint is the area where two bones meet. There are over 100 different types of arthritis. The joint pain it causes can impact your life in the ability to do everyday activities. This news is great for those that might suffer this disease.

According to a new study, antioxidants found in green tea may reduce the severity and even prevent symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.  The antioxidants are called called polyphenols and they seem to possess more antioxidant potency than other vitamins. Researchers from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, compared the effects of polyphenols in mice. The animals received either plain water or water that contained an amount of green tea polyphenols equivalent to four cups of green tea a day. Researchers then induced rheumatoid arthritis symptoms in the mice.Eight of the 18 mice that received polyphenols developed arthritis compared with 17 of the 18 mice who did not receive the antioxidants. Several recent studies have shown that polyphenols reduce cellular damage, lowering the risks for serious illnesses such as heart disease and cancer.

Along with the study, researchers also point out there is anecdotal evidence suggesting that people living in India, China and Japan — where green tea consumption is high – have lower rates of rheumatoid arthritis.

With more research maybe eventually Arthritis could be prevented or even treated with the power of Green Tea. Even before then, it is another reason to keep drinking the green stuff, if only to protect your bones.
