The Chinese lunar calendar is usually 1 to 2 months behind the Western (Gregorian) calendar. In 2020, the Year of the Rat officially starts on 25th January 2020 and ends on 11th February 2021.
Rat is the first of the 12 Chinese zodiac sign cycle, followed by ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. It represents intelligence, adaptability and vitality in Chinese culture.
2020 Element: The Metal Rat?
In the traditional Chinese calendar, each year is marked by one Heavenly stem combining one Earthly Branch (see pictures below). 2020 is the year of “Geng Zi”. Geng (庚) is one of the 10 Heavenly Stems and its property is metal according to the Five Elements.
Zi (子) is one of the 12 Earthly Branches, and it is represented by the rat. That’s why the year 2020 is the year of the Metal Rat.
